How To Paint A Rustic Wood Look

Creating a DIY weathered wood look with paint is then elementary! Follow along to run into how.

Hey Friends!

I know I've shared about the weathered wood look several times earlier but I tin't help myself.
It is just Then ridiculously easy to accomplish that painted weathered wood look that so many are afterwards.

You lot don't accept to discover or apply erstwhile pallet wood.
You don't have to sit your forest outside for weeks or months to "weather' it.
Just paint information technology to make information technology "wait" as if you lot did!

Recently I shared my bath cabinet makeover with y'all and mentioned the white plastic mirror.
And my dissatisfaction with it. ;)
You can find it at Lowe's, by the manner, for $24.

Here's what it looked like "before"….

It's okay merely it honestly bugged me every time I came into the bathroom.
Not because information technology looked bad necessarily, merely because it was just "off" for the room.

Meet upwardly close?

I wasn't feeling it…then I painted information technology. :)

Brown!

MATERIALS Listing

  • Coco Chalk Paint (this color volition give a similar look)
  • White Paint (my new go-to chalk paint mode white, also cheaper)
  • Apartment Finish Summit Coat (no shine, good stuff!)
  • Bit Brush
  • Blue Pigment (I honey this one!)

Coco (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint), to be exact.
It's the perfect base color for a "driftwood" or "weathered wood" base, in my opinion.

Every bit you can see above, I did 1 very thin coat and that's all.
I was totally okay with the white showing through on this one because I wanted it to exist mostly white.

Desire to see some of these projects in "live" time? Hop on over and follow forth with me on INSTAGRAM. I'm always sharing in my stories as I'one thousand doing projects, finding new piece of furniture, fun finds….just all the twenty-four hours to solar day behind the scenes.

Once that was dry, I started adding white, lots of white with a chip brush.

And more white, until I thought information technology was white enough.
I actually had to take it to the bathroom and hold it upwardly several times before I finally added enough white.
The key to this is using a dry paint castor with little paint and keep calculation layers.
This will require more strokes and does take some time simply it is what will give y'all the appearance of worn, weathered painted wood y'all are later on.

I didn't desire information technology to look "brown" or also weather-y, just a tad chip with mostly white.

I think I achieved that.

I'm so much happier with it!
The lesson here? If you don't dearest it… pigment it!
Don't merely settle, fix it up and make information technology how y'all really want it.

Upward shut…

I LOVE the depth and item it has now.
It doesn't look plastic-y anymore.

I sealed information technology with a coat of flat finish. Remember, I wanted it to look old so didn't want information technology shiny.

Now, I also promised I'd testify you the mirror I moved out of the dining room.

And I am, just permit me kickoff preface this by saying that I am quite sure I'm breaking a decorating "dominion" or ii.
But I don't really intendance considering rules smules.
It'south my home and I'll decorate it in a way that makes me happy.
And I call up you should besides! Everyone should.
Information technology'due south nice to know the "rules" and maybe have them as a guideline but sometimes they just need to go right out the window! ;)

Okay, then…as y'all know, I moved the chalkboard I had in the kitchen, to the dining room….

…so where practice you recall the mirror went?? ha… yep.

To the kitchen where the chalkboard used to exist and it totally opened the space up.
Instead of having a big black board on the left wall (which sort of "closed" upward the kitchen space) I now have a beautifully large reflective mirror instead.
So my hope for it opening upwards the space transpired.
I also hoped it would reverberate some calorie-free back into the space.
It does a fiddling and trust me, this space needs it much!
We have large copse all effectually our home, along with a front porch and back screened porch, all of which aid cake the sun a chip.
And so I volition accept all the light and reflection I can get.

The dining room is actually pretty bright with the nice large windows and I don't miss having the mirror on that back wall at all.

My husband and I had a time getting the mirror up in this space.
The manufactory set screws in the back came popping out of the plastic frame of the mirror on i side. EEEK!!
Can yous imagine if it had washed that when it was upwardly. Give thanks goodness information technology was when we had our hands on it.
So, we had to do a bit of repair to get it up and secure.

Which leads me to why I painted it while information technology was up on the wall. ;)

I was not well-nigh to remove it again!! ;)
And yes, every bit you see, my decorating imitation pas….mirror upward too high, I am certain.
Oh well, I am proficient with information technology and that's all that matters.

Anyway, I did record information technology up pretty proficient and so no paint would get to the wall.

And just to let y'all know that I'm really not paint happy.
I mean I am, but I'm non.
I had it up in it's "simulated gold cease" celebrity but decided that color was too not working for me in this new infinite.
I tried, really, I tried.

I used the fabulous Coco Chalk Paint on this likewise.

You all know that I'1000 giving my kitchen a mini makeover presently and I need this mirror to match.
For the kitchen plans you tin can meet the bottom of this post here >>> "IKEA Ektorp Makeover and Plans"

Now, I wanted the mirror frame in the bathroom to exist mostly white.
This frame in the kitchen, I wanted mostly "weathered wood look", less white.
I wanted it to appear as if it were really sometime painted woods that had weathered naturally.

I too wanted it to expect as if it had been painted bluish at in one case, so I added quite a bit of blue.
Again, aforementioned as in a higher place, using a dry out brush with picayune paint and adding layers.

Once I was done with the blueish, I went over that with the white.

And more white until I was satisfied with the wait….

…which by this point, I was.
It took several applications of white and too another brush of blue here and in that location.
I'm really happy with how it turned out and I immediately idea it looked meliorate in the space. (for my decor style anyway)

***To note, I shared this photo unedited to testify how nighttime the kitchen can be.
And how the lite shines in the window opposite directly onto this wall.
That's why the mirror ened up at that place. :)

Besides, I had considered having it "sit" on the ledge to become information technology a bit lower…but… I wanted that infinite for decorating or whatever!

And then I centered it in the space instead.

Pin this for later for your own DIY weathered wood wait …
